Is Spring here?

February started as a beautiful month that promised to drive out winter. Two weeks were unseasonably warm recalling evidence of the changing climate. The snow that had been abundant in January and early February melted quickly and inspired the hope that new plant life was starting to show underneath and animals should return from their winter camps.

February 2023 – Vogelmoos Nature Reserve: Yes, nature was waking up from hibernation.

Corylus avellana – Common hazel
Waterline of one of the pond with Tussilago farfara – Coltsfoot
showing their saturated yellow flower.

Then, for almost 3 weeks winter returend with snow and freezing tempera-tures that gave the ponds their icy coverage back. Starting mid-March we seem to have overcome the snow season. Spring takes the upper hand.

Anas platyrhynchos – Mallard
Gonepteryx rhamni – Brimstone on Tussilago farfara
Bufo bufo – Common toad
Iris pseudacorus – Yellow flag (yellow iris)

As I am writing these paragraphs, the news forecast cold and rainy weather – even some snow; but I am confident that winter will not return in the lower regions of central Switzerland.
