Capturing Autumn’s Foggy Essence in Black and White

When the temperature falls in late autumn, the sky turns grey thanks to a thick layer of fog that seems to be just in arms reach. It may perdure for days and weeks. On the lake front, where I live, much of November has been shaped by this low lying thick fog that filters the sun light. Concurrently, the fall colors have faded leaving nature in recession and involution.

I wish to convey a glimpse of nature of my area. Black and white photography captures the mood best, in my opinion.

Two of my favorite birches in the Nature Reserve
The two pictures were created within 5 minutes from each other.
An island of light inmidst of the forest. It invites to approach
to sense the warmth of the sunrays.
Mullein, a plant with an abundance of yellow flowers
leaving just the skeleton full of seeds.
The mature seedhead of bulrush (Typha latifolia) develops in late summer and signals the arrival of fall. The leaves turn brown in late fall.
The heron stalking prey. It must be patient to catch a meal.
The frogs and toads are already retreating into their winter quarters.
A cosy place in the forest for family gatherings during warmer seasons. Now abandoned til spring.
And yes, we had the first load of snow in the city and on the hills
of Central Switzerland. The decaying tree trunk reminds us that life is finite. Small trees repopulate the clearing and have it disappear in time.

The year will soon end. I hope that nature’s needs to foster the strength for the years to come will be addressed with high priority now and beyond 2024. There is so much life quality that we can gain from a healthy and sprawling environment.

To all who read these lines, my very best wishes for 2025.
